Not all eye creams are created equal. Whilst my genes blessed me with dark circles I can safely say that puffy eyes aren’t a thing I need to struggle with. Teenage me spent a hefty sum of money in department stores trying to remedy this—little did I know that dark circles are genetic and will never go away completely. Ultimately I surrendered to the idea of slight blue darkness under my eyes and made sure I got plenty of water combined with 8 hours of sleep.
Throughout my twenties, I rejected the idea of eye cream—tiny pots of overpriced moisturizers and a ton of hollow claims. Using mostly French pharmacy and quite a few organic brands I brought them up to the eye anyway. If it isn’t safe to use around the eyes, why on earth would I apply it anywhere else? This philosophy is one I still adhere to and so far it’s worked out great. Turning 34 recently and enjoying a night out with sunshine, wine, and tons of laughter, I was greeted by small crows feet the next morning. Apparently they were just waiting to pop up! I love to smile so hydration wasn’t going to cut it anymore, I needed something with more punch. I needed something gentle, pleasant texture, fragrance-free, and effective—the calling card of French pharmacy brands.
Avène combines a unique “patch” texture which mimics the skin, ensuring excellent absorption of active ingredients all night long, with a fragrance-free formulation. It’s very creamy going on and feels occlusive without being sticky. This is a product you apply before going to bed so don’t worry too much about how you’ll look. The main show here is not the texture but the actives, ascofilline to help boost your collagen production and good old fragmented hyaluronic acid to plump up the skin. Pre-tocopheryl is a vitamin E precursor to repair some of the UV damage and retinaldehyde as a potent vitamin A derivate to stimulate cell renewal. Whilst the formulation is quite gentle, it does pack a punch and feels wonderful on the skin.
My routine was quite simple. A double cleanse routine, towel dry, and a quick spray of Avène thermal spring water followed up with this hyaluronic acid serum all over. Always give HA serums time to sink in before applying something else around the eyes, it’s a mess otherwise. Pump slowly with these types of airtight containers and apply the balm around the eyes before going to bed. The well-rested effect is very much worth it!
